Acute bronchitis is an infection of the major bronchial tubes that lead to the lungs. It usually follows the cold or flu virus, when your immune system is weakened and your lungs are already irritated. To treat bronchitis, you may need to use over-the-counter pain medication or medication meant to soothe your throat, while also getting plenty of rest, drinking warm fluids, easing chest discomfort with a hot compress, and breathing in steam to soothe your bronchial passageways. If your symptoms get severe or persist beyond a week, call the doctor to determine the appropriate treatment.

Polycythemia (elevated red blood cell count) is a rare blood disease in which the body produces too many red blood cells. Causes of polycythemia are either primary (acquired or genetic mutations) or secondary (diseases, conditions, high altitude). Examples of primary polycythemia include:

  • Fatigue
  • Excessive sweating
  • Unintended weight loss
  • Gouty arthritis, usually in big toe
  • Shortness of breath
  • Headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Weakness
  • Feeling pressure or fullness on the left side of the abdomen where the spleen is located.
  • Vision problems
  • Heavy bleeding from minor cuts
  • Bleeding from the gums
  • Itching
  • Redness in the face
  • A burning feeling in the hands and feet

Complications of a high red blood cell count include blood clots, heart attack, stroke, enlarged liver and spleen, angina (heart pain), AML leukemia, and heart failure. Blood clots in the liver or kidney can cause sudden, intense pain. Treatment goals for patients with polycythemia are to manage symptoms and reduce the risk of complications like heart attack and stroke.

Help I have a friend who is a gym goer Im not sure of his quantity or how long he has been taking steroids, but stopped recently because he had really bad neck pain. No dr or scan, ultrasound etc showed anything. Put on huge pain killer amounts didnt help alot but felt after about six weeks some relief. Until today when he thinks a prior knee issue has flared up. If this a result of steroid abuse how long before it heals? Im pretty sure he wont touch them again. He can handle all over aches and pains but these last two injuries have had him off work.

I sat next to someone coughing on the plane for three hours and 55 minutes; nonstop. I came down with a bad case of bronchitis four days later. I slept for the first three days and noticed a return of fever and saw my physician. He prescribed steroids, Ventolin, and OTC decongestant at evening time. From November 25 until today, December 19, I have improved but am still extremely fatigued by midafternoon. This is opposite to my usual energetic self. I am only wheezing minimally, but find the length of recovery excessive. I want to resume my normal exercise activities but my daily mile walk takes a toll on me by midafternoon. I usually spin once a week and take a Zumba class once a week in addition to the walking, and I cannot hack it quite yet.
