For example, I have heard it said that cats gain weight because they are hypothyroid. Cats do not get hypothyroidism except in one type of situation. If a hyperthyroid cat has his thyroid glands surgically removed or has radioactive iodine treatment for feline hyperthyroidism, then it is possible that after the removal, the cat's thyroid levels may be low, either temporarily or permanently. However that is a man-made condition. Naturally occurring hypothyroidism, if it does exist, is so rare that your chances of having a cat with that condition are pretty much nil.

In one of your replies to a comment you said that you shouldn’t eat before a short run . 3-8 miles (roughly)? I have been running for the past 3 years, ran a half in the spring and I am now training for my first marathon I am on week 5 with a total of 25-30 miles per week. I have previously not eaten prior to any runs even long runs with exception of a granola bar before long runs. I recently tried eating a small meal prior to a long run and a granola bar throughout the run and found that it helped significantly. So I decided to continue to try eating a small meal (toast with peanut butter and honey and a yogurt) before my runs and feel it has helped curve my appetite throughout the rest of the day. Is this not a good idea? I’m super concerned about the weight gain because I know it will eventually come off, just want to make sure I am fueling correctly.

While I appreciate the article and do believe that many people make excuses about why they have weight, I have to share that because of that sort of advice, my thyroid issue went undiagnosed for years. And guess what happened when my thyroid was regulated? I dropped 26 pounds! I didn’t change a thing in terms of calories or exercise. I did the same thing with a regulated thyroid gland. Oh, and that is NOT a rare thing. It is extremely common. I’m an advocate now for having women get their thyroid tested and not from a doctor who only looks at TSH (it’s not enough–symptoms must be treated!) I’d say half of them also mentioned having low thyroid symptoms or mentioned they are receiving thyroid hormone replacement. Also, other hormones must be in balance for weight to be regulated. To the author: Please be careful with your casual, non-medical advice. That sort of advice cost me years of feeling sick and being obese!

I completely agree with Andy. All the sugars – honey, agave, etc.- “allowable” on Paleo trigger insulin responses and signal the body to store fat. I went low carb 2 years ago, and yes, the excess fat I couldn’t lose for 30 years just evaporated. Now if I ever feel a pound or 2 creeping back (rare), I check in on my carbs, cut back a bit, INCREASE dietary FAT (yes!), and I’m back to good in no time. As much as we know about fat not being the bad-guy, we STILL have a hard time truly understanding it. (Good) Fat Rocks! Otherwise, I totally agree with most of your assessments. SLEEP is a critical one!!!!
